There are 9 recognized dental specialties in the United States, Canada and Australia. To be a specialist requires the formation of a residency or advanced graduate training program.
DDS AND DMD PROGRAMS:
Both, the DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) and DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicina) are an academic degree awarded to dentists, along with the following; which each fully qualifies the holder to practice dentistry:
Bachelor of Dentistry (BDent)
Bachelor of Dental Surgery/Chirurgiae (BDS or BChD)
Bachelor of Dental Science (BDSc)
Bachelor of Dental Medicine (BDM)
Licentiate in Dental Surgery (LDS)
Doctor of Dentistry (CD)
Candidate of Odontology (Cand.Odont.)
and Doctor of Medical Dentistry (Dr.Med.Dent.)
CERTIFICATIONS:
Once the residency is completed, a dentist must grant a certificate of special training. Many programs have the required expertise or optional advanced degrees such as MBBS/MD (or specific Maxillofacial Surgery), MS or PhD.
Orthodontics: 2-3 years
Endodontics: 2-3 years
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: 4-6 years
Longer for MD / MBBS granting of degree programmes
Periodontics: 3 years
Prosthdontist: 3 years
Subcontractors may choose to specialize in Maxillofacial Prosthetics.
An extra year of training after completing a programme of prostheses.
Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology: 3 years
Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology: 3 years
Pediatric Dentistry: 2 years
Dental Public Health: 1-2 years
