Course Requirements

Basic prerequisites

There are many options when applying to a dental school. Here, we provide you with some options that applicants can select according to their needs, knowledge and time.

       GENERAL OR INORGANIC CHEMISTRY:
      •  One year (8 semester hours) with laboratory.
        - Chemistry 105: General Chemistry & Lab
        - Chemistry 106: General Chemistry & Lab
       PHYSICS:
      •  One year (8 semester hours) with laboratory.
      •  Physics is not on the DAT, so these classes may be postponed.
      •  Option 1:
        - Physics 115: Pre-Medical Professional Physics I
        - Physics 116: Pre-Medical Professional Physics II
      •  Option 2:
        - Physics, chemistry, engineering, mathematics.
        - Computer science majors should take the 121 series.
        - Check your major requirements.
        - Physics 121: Principles of Physics I
        - Physics 123: Principles of Physics II
       ORGANIC CHEMISTRY:
      •  One year (8 semester hours) with laboratory.
        - Chemistry 351 Organic Chemistry
        - Chemistry 352 Organic Chemistry
       BIOLOGY:
      •  One year (8 semester hours - 12 semester hours according to the school) with laboratory.
      •  Option 1:
        - Biology 221: Microbiology and laboratory
        - Biology 460: Advanced Human Anatomy
        - Biology 461: Principles of Physiology
       ENGLISH:
      •  One year (2 classes)
      •  The class taken depend on major preferences, such as the 316 is for pre-professional students.
        - English 111: College Writing
        - English 111c: College Writing using computers
        - English 311, 312, 314, 315, 316: Advanced Writing
       MATH:
      •  The requirements depend on the dental school.
      •  G.E. requirements are sufficient.
      •  Few dental schools required calculus.
        - Math 110: College Algebra
        - Math 111: Trigonometry
        - Math 119 and 112: Introduction to Calculus
       RECOMMENDED COURSES:
      •  Only some dental schools require extra pre-requisites.
        - Biology 375: Genetics and Molecular Biology
        - Biology 374: Cellular Biology
        - Chemistry 481: Biochemistry
        - Statistics 221: Principles of Statistics
        - Biology 380: Histology
        - Biology 460: Human Anatomy
