The Schuster Center For Professional Development

The Profitability Management Model serves as the foundation to The Practice Development Program at The Schuster Center. It is a learn-by-doing process for both the dentist and his/her staff - personalized and tailored to each individual practice. It helps each doctor discover and apply the principles of Dr. Schuster's model.

By implementing this concept, dentists learn to become C.E.O.'s of their dental practices. They learn to use management principles and economic/financial principles to get control of the resources that dominate their lives - time, money, energy.

While the concepts are easy to understand and are effective in any type of practice, the program is not a cookbook education. It is a total management system requiring commitment and work, with multiple rewards as the result.

The Practice Development Curriculum consists of three programs: The Blueprint for Success Program, The Management Program and The Advanced Development Program. Through these programs, individual strategies are developed to address management issues such as cash flow, overhead, communication, marketing, organization, time management, case acceptance and team development.

These strategies provide the dentist with a way of getting control of the practice so that he/she is free to enjoy a more rewarding relationship with patients and ultimately a more fulfilling life. Long after they are done with their formal curriculum, lifelong learners stay engaged as members of the Alumni Association.

Practice Development Analysts

The dentist's relationship with The Schuster Center begins with a Practice Development Analyst. The Analyst works with the dentist in an educational and analytical process, to determine what the dentist is currently experiencing in the practice and what s/he ultimately would like the practice to look like. This process culminates in an on-site visit to examine the practice and determine specifically the current state of the practice and what must occur to meet the dentist's critical needs.

During the on-site visit, the Analyst acts, in effect, as a diagnostician. The Analyst conducts thorough interviews with the doctor and team, as well as conducting an examination which includes 19 different critical points of analysis in the practice. The Analyst interprets the financial and practice information for the dentist, as well as observing how the practice functions from the patient's point of view.

The examination process is crucial because it provides the dentist with knowledge and an objective appraisal of the financial and operational needs of the practice. From this point, the examination is used as a baseline or starting point for The Management Program statistical tracking which occurs each month.

Practice Development Coaches

One of the hallmarks of The Schuster Center's total management approach is the Practice Development Coach. Once the dentist has been invited into a Practice Development Program that is appropriate for her/him, all of the critical practice data that was collected by the Analyst is brought to the coaching team for evaluation. Through this process, the Coach who can best serve the needs of the dentist and practice is selected.

The Coach forms a one-on-one relationship with the doctor and team to provide on-going guidance, clarity, momentum and accountability as the team applies new concepts to the practice.

Monthly phone conferences offer continuous supportive monitoring of statistics as well as feedback to keep the doctor on track with the goals and objectives that he/she has established in the program.

Experienced in both clinical and management capacities of general and specialty practices, the Coaches have walked in the shoes of their students and are further qualified as excellent communicators and problem solvers. Additionally, the Coaches play a dual role by effectively leading classes as Faculty members.

Schuster Center Faculty

Knowledgeable, motivating and capable of instilling concepts, The Schuster Center's faculty leads the dentist and teams through the structured learning retreats and ensures that the student understands how to apply the information to his/her individual practice.

The faculty members are uniquely able to get and hold a student's attention. They speak the language of the dental profession. Faculty members use lecture format to impart hard data and group process techniques to teach interactive skills. Both approaches are vital for the student, not only in learning this model, but in being able to apply it to the practice.
