The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), the state's university of the health sciences, is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in: the undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate and continuing education of health professionals and scientists; the conduct of biomedical, psychosocial, clinical and public health research; health promotion, disease prevention and the delivery of health care; and service to our communities and the entire state. Providing educational, research and service programs at campuses in Camden, New Brunswick/Piscataway, Newark, Scotch Plains and Stratford, in communities throughout the state, and nationally and internationally through advanced communication and information technologies, UMDNJ seeks to meet the needs of our diverse constituencies and improve the health and quality of life of the citizens of New Jersey and society at large.

We are the nation's largest health sciences University. We are New Jersey's state wide system of health sciences education, biomedical research and HealthCare. We are the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Founded in 1970 to consolidate New Jersey's health professions education, UMDNJ has become the very core of the state's health sciences system. With five campuses and a network of more than 200 affiliated healthcare and educational partners spanning the state, we touch the lives of almost every New Jerseyan every day. Our mission is both simple and inspiring-to enhance the health of all New Jerseyans through broad-based programs covering every aspect of the health sciences:

We Teach New Jersey's future HealthCare professionals in medicine, dentistry, allied health and nursing, as well as future scientists in the life science; and we provide lifelong learning for HealthCare professionals.

We Heal with the most advanced treatment techniques through specialized referrals at University hospitals and behavioral health programs. We Discover ways to prevent and treat New Jersey's most serious health problems through biomedical research programs.

We Care through community service and outreach programs, particularly in the state's urban centers.

We are UMDNJ New Jersey's University of the health sciences, with a commitment to excellence in education, research and patient care.

With more than 4,000 students of medicine, dentistry allied health, nursing, and the life sciences, and more than 1,000 medical interns and residents, UMDNJ is the single entity responsible for statewide undergraduate and graduate medical and dental education, as well as for other health professions. The University also is New Jersey's primary source of continuing and advanced education for health professionals. Through its eight schools on five campuses throughout the state, the University provides New Jersey with a supply of top quality health sciences professional appropriate to meet the current and future needs of its HealthCare delivery system. The University's educational mission involves adjusting its enrollment to offset shortages in the HealthCare workforce, as well as developing new programs to address emerging technological trends and public health needs. UMDNJ is accredited by the Commission of Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, a regional accrediting body. All programs are approved by the academic, governmental and professional agencies in specific areas of specialization.

Our health sciences University is the incubator from which new medical knowledge grows and develops into better HealthCare. Ideas born in UMDNJ's laboratories are translated into improved medications, new diagnostic and treatment techniques and innovative medical equipment in HealthCare programs throughout the country. For New Jersey, UMDNJ serves as a resource for, and a link among, academic scientists working at the state's colleges and universities, practicing physicians at community hospitals, and research and development experts in pharmaceutical and other health-related industries. Since the University's mission is to improve the health of New Jersey, research programs focus on the state's most urgent health problems. UMDNJ faculty are recognized nationally for their research efforts in AIDS, tuberculosis, cancer, environmental medicine, neurosciences, heart disease, genetics, and treatment for mental illness.

UMDNJ serves as the core of a unique, statewide system designed to provide all New Jerseyans with access to a full range of high quality HealthCare services. The University's commitment to comprehensive health services for all citizens of the state encompasses both state-of-the-art specialized treatment programs offered regionally on a referral basis, and primary care and prevention programs for the state's neediest citizens. Specialty services offered through the University hospitals and outpatient faculty practice centers include trauma, liver disease, reproductive endocrinology, cancer treatment, neurology, neurosurgery and cardiology. The University and its teaching hospitals also provide comprehensive primary care, dental treatment and state-of-the-art mental health services to its host communities in Newark, New Brunswick and Camden. In addition, outreach programs utilizing community-based clinics and mobile HealthCare teams offer care to medically underserved citizens in urban and rural areas throughout the state.
