Mt. Hood Community College

At Mt. Hood Community College you'll find highly skilled faculty members providing you the best in educational opportunities. Offering over 60 professional/technical programs, as well as a variety of university transfer possibilities, MHCC prepares you for the jobs of today and tomorrow.

Mt. Hood Community College opened in 1966 and now enrolls about 26,000 students each year. Classes are offered at the 212-acre main campus in Gresham, the MHCC Maywood Park Center, the Bruning Center for Allied Health Education and evening education centers at district public schools.

The college is financed by local property tax funds, state reimbursement funds and student tuition. Local voters established the college tax base in 1968 and approved tax base increases in 1970 and 1980.

Board members are elected to four-year terms, meet the second Wednesday night of each month and serve without pay. The first president of the college was Dr Earl Klapstein. He served until 1976 and was followed by Dr. R. Stephen Nicholson until November 1985. Dr. Paul E. Kreider served as president from 1985 until 1996 with Dr. Joel Vela serving from 1996 until 2000. Dr. Robert Silverman served from 2000 to 2007. Mr. Gary Murph is currently serving as Interim President. Mr. Murph retired from the college in early 2007 from his position as Chief Operating Officer. Before his retirement, Mr. Murph oversaw the college’s Computer Services, Risk Management, Campus Safety, Finance and Accounting, Auxiliary Operations, Human Resources, Facilities Management and worked closely with other administrators in the daily operation of MHCC.

Dental Hygiene

Dental hygienists work with dentists to provide well-rounded oral health care to patients. They are dedicated to helping people improve their health by teaching preventive oral-health measures and by treating existing conditions.

Their duties may include taking X-rays, applying cavity-preventing agents such as fluoride and sealants, administering local anesthetics, removing hard and soft deposits from teeth and providing instructions and information for better at-home dental care.

Visible improvements in oral health often can be seen in a very short time and dental hygienists receive considerable satisfaction in knowing they have helped people toward a healthier life.

Is this for me?

Some personal attributes necessary for success include an aptitude for the biological sciences, a desire to serve the public, good hand and finger dexterity, professional appearance, time management skills, belief in good oral hygiene and an ability to work with people.

What does the program offer?

The Dental Hygiene program offers in-depth instruction in basic and dental sciences integrated with instruction in dental hygiene therapy and dental procedures. The highly qualified instructors have years of experience in the dental hygiene field. In addition, students will gain practical experience under instructor supervision at MHCC's fully-equipped dental hygiene clinic.

The Dental Hygiene program is a restricted-entry program. You must apply for admission and meet the program criteria before being considered for acceptance.

What are my options?

A TWO-YEAR ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE DEGREE in the Dental Hygiene Program provides you with the necessary knowledge and skills needed for an entry-level position as a clinical practitioner. Upon graduation you will be eligible to take the national and state/regional board examinations required for licensure to practice as a dental hygienist in the United States and Canada.

IF YOU PLAN TO EARN A BACHELOR'S DEGREE, many courses in the Dental Hygiene two-year associate of applied science degree curriculum are transferable to four-year colleges and can be used toward a bachelor's degree. Please check with the program adviser for more information.
