The University of Louisiana at Monroe (Department Head of Dental Hygiene)

Dental Hygiene is one of the most rapidly expanding professions in the Allied Health field. Dental Hygienists are licensed oral health professionals who focus on preventing and treating oral diseases and promoting overall health. They are graduates of accredited programs in colleges and universities and must pass National and State Board Examinations in order to be licensed. As part of the dental team , working closely with the dentist, the professional roles in dental hygiene include, but are not limited to, those of a clinician, educator, patient advocate, administrator/manager and researcher in private and public health care settings.

As clinicians, dental hygienists:

  • Review health histories, examine head, neck, and oral tissues for disease

  • Perform oral cancer and blood pressure screenings

  • Expose, process and interpret dental radiographs (x-rays)

  • Remove deposits from teeth

  • Provide non-surgical periodontal therapy

  • Provide supportive periodontal therapy

  • Apply preventive agents (fluoride, antimicrobials, sealants)

  • Provide oral health care instructions

  • Provide dietary counseling

  • Administer local anesthesia


Dental Hygienists must complete an accredited university curriculum and pass National and State Board Examinations in order to be licensed to practice. Upon completion of the dental hygiene program, he/she is eligible to apply for state licensing exams. Licensure certifies that the person is qualified to perform the dental hygiene functions permitted in the State Practice Act the dental hygiene functions permitted in the Louisiana State Dental Practice Act.

The Department of Dental Hygiene, an educational section of the College of Health Sciences, derives its purposes and functions from the mission statements of The University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Our primary purpose is to provide quality education to all dental hygiene students, without discrimination, while recognizing and respecting the dignity of each individual. To fulfill this purpose, we are committed to providing this education by promoting scholarly activity in dental hygiene theory and practice. We are committed to contributing to the oral health needs of the community by providing high quality care in a cost efficient manner. We promote the educational growth and development of each individual through lifelong learning.

Program Goal

The Department of Dental Hygiene is committed to educating dental health professionals who can function as members of the dental health team and who can provide oral health care in today's changing world. Intelligent problem solving and accountability are expected of each student who is enrolled in the dental hygiene program. The department is committed to preparing students who will be able to perform these roles of clinician, change agent, educator/health promoter, researcher, and administrator, enabling them to meet the future oral health needs of society.

Program Goals

  • Prepare students through appropriate academic and clinical education to be qualifies dental hygienists who will be competent according to The University of Louisiana at Monroe, Department of Dental Hygiene Competencies for the Dental Hygienist.

  • Maintain a contemporary baccalaureate dental hygiene program that reflects relevant and current dental hygiene practice and standards of care.

  • Provide a dynamic interdisciplinary dental hygiene curriculum that integrates biomedical, clinical and behavioral sciences.

  • Maintain admission policies to ensure admission of a qualified student body.

  • Maintain a baccalaureate degree completion program to support and encourage continued formal dental hygiene education.

  • Provide quality individualized patient centered dental hygiene care to diverse populations within the community.

  • Participate in and promote collaborative community health programs.

  • Serve as a resource of oral health knowledge and education for the community and healthcare professionals.

  • Support and engage in activities of professional associations.

  • Demonstrate activities and support in the areas of dental hygiene education, research and service.

  • Create a positive and rewarding academic environment that facilitates continued growth and enrichment of all students and faculty.

  • Develop awareness and appreciation of careers in dental hygiene education.
