Career Centers of Texas

Dentists are busier than ever as they try to keep up with a growing and aging population and increased demand for dental care in the United States. Dental assistants are specially trained to perform clerical and administrative tasks so that the dentist can spend more time on complex dental procedures. In fact, dental assisting is projected to be one of the fastest-growing occupations through 2014. At Career Centers of Texas, you can get the education and hands-on training required to start your career in dental assisting.

Clinical Skills Training

In our Dental Assistant Diploma program, your training will focus on a variety of clinical procedures you will perform on the job as you assist the dentist chairside during dental procedures.

  • Assisting with oral surgery, oral evacuation, and other procedures.

  • Coronal polishing, fluoride, and applying pit and fissure sealants.

  • Handing instruments and materials to the dentist.

  • Identifying structures of the oral cavity, the different types of teeth, and universal codes for each tooth.

  • Instructing patients on preventative and postoperative dental care.

  • Sterilizing and disinfecting instruments and equipment and other infection control measures.

  • Taking dental radiographs (if certified) and impressions of patients' teeth.

Administrative Skills Training

Most dental assistants also have administrative responsibilities to help maintain an efficient, profitable dental office. Your training will include classes in dental office procedures such as taking inventory, managing patient records, and communicating verbally and in written correspondence. Having good computer skills will help you stand out to employers when competing for dental assistant jobs. Through our combination of classroom and lab training, you will have an opportunity to master skills in Microsoft Word®, Excel®, Outlook®, and PowerPoint®.

Prepare for Certification

The dental assistant program is designed to help you prepare for the required radiology certification exams approved by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE), which may include certification to perform certain radiologic procedures.† Regulations vary in each state. In Texas, you must complete a mandatory short course approved by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners and be registered with TSBDE to be qualified to take x-rays in a dentist's office. Contact us for more information about program or certification requirements.
