Dental specialties

Dental specialties are recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA) to protect the public, promote the art and science of dentistry, and improve the quality of care. The specialties are recognized in the areas where knowledge and advanced skills are essential to preserve or restore oral health.

In the United States, Canada and Australia, there are 9 recognized dental specialties. These designations are approved by the Council on Dental Education and Licensure of the American Dental Association (ADA).

Many programs have the required expertise or optional advanced degrees such as (MBBS MD or specific Maxillofacial Surgery), MS or PhD.

Dental Public Health It refers to the dental health of public education, and controls dental diseases with the administration of group dental care programs. Duration of the career: 1 - 2 years.	Endodontics Endodontics is concerned to the prevention and treatment of disorders of the dental pulp, through endodontic therapy. Duration of the career: 2 - 3 years.	Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology It investigates the causes, and effects of diseases which affect the oral and maxillofacial regions. Duration of the career: 3 years.

Oral And Maxillofacial Radiology It is concerned to the interpretation of radiograph for the identification of pathologic. Duration of the career: 3 years.	Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery It includes the treatment and correct diseases, injuries and defects of the oral and maxillofacial region. Duration of the career: 4 - 6 years.	Orthodontics Orthodontics is concerned in control of irregular dental development, alignment and correction of abnormalities. Duration of the career: 2-3 years.

Pediatric Dentistry Pediatric Dentistry is focused on the oral health of infants and children, that provides preventative and therapeutic attention. Duration of the career: 2 years.	Periodontics Periodontics deals with the maintenance of health, diagnosis, treatment of gum diseases and other areas around the teeth. Duration of the career: 3 years.	Prosthodontics Prosthodontics uses facial and oral prostheses to treat or correct appearance, restore oral function, and health of the patient. Duration of the career: 3 years.
